Surviving Thunder and Fireworks

For many dogs, the loud booms of thunder and fireworks aren’t just unpleasant — they’re downright terrifying. While we may marvel at summer storms or enjoy a festive fireworks display, our pets often experience these events very differently. Panic, pacing, trembling, and even attempts to escape are common reactions in noise-sensitive dogs. Thankfully, there are practical steps you can take to help your dog feel safer and more secure during these stressful moments.

Create a Safe Space

One of the most effective ways to help your dog cope during storms or fireworks is to give them a quiet, secure space to retreat to. This could be a crate with a blanket draped over it, a quiet room with curtains drawn, or even a spot under a bed or table. Add soft bedding, a favourite toy, or an item of your clothing to provide comfort. Keep the area consistent so they begin to associate it with safety and calm.

Try Calming Aids

There are several over-the-counter products designed to help ease anxiety in dogs during noisy events. These include calming pheromone sprays or diffusers, pressure wraps like the ThunderShirt, and natural supplements such as L-theanine or valerian root. Some dogs also benefit from background noise, like a fan or white noise machine, to help mask the sound of fireworks or thunder. Always check with your vet before introducing new supplements or products.

Training Techniques That Help

In the long term, desensitisation and counter-conditioning can be powerful training tools. This involves gradually exposing your dog to recorded sounds of thunder or fireworks at a low volume while pairing it with positive experiences like treats or play. Over time, this helps them form a more neutral or even positive association with the noise. Start months ahead of expected firework events for the best results, and consider consulting one our professional trainers if your dog’s anxiety is severe.
